On Tuesday I had the second lecture in my Feminist Theory class, and in preparing for the class we had to read a book called “Feminism is for Everybody” by Bell Hooks, which was a good read. But I find it really interesting that a lot of the reasons given for why sexism and patriarchy prevail is the desire for power. Men desire power over women, and I’m sure many women want power over men. And I guess it just baffles me that we’re always looking for some way to dominate and reign over other people. It’s sad that the search for significance leads us to a place where we feel we have to conquer others. I guess it may be easy to say this, but it seems life would be a lot better if we all weren’t looking for personal gain. I was reading a book called “Wrestling With God” before class, and in it the author rewrites a popular American History book quote, “the right to grab life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” All around me I’m struck with how much we as people want to take what we “deserve” and make ourselves happy, yet it’s that idea that is killing humanity. In listening to last week’s message from Mars Hill (Rob Bell’s church), the speaker looked at Genesis 3 and how after Adam and Eve eat the apple, Adam and Eve start referring to themselves with I and Me trying to protect themselves. So, it’s needless to say that selfish nature that comes from sin ends up leading to many distortions of God’s Creation, including sexism.
